An Eastern Perfumery Primer:
Attar is a traditional Hindu fragrant oil blend derived from botanical sources such as flower petals, exotic woods, spices, and resins. Over time the oils blend together until the sandalwood is completely saturated with the fragrance of the flowers. Like a fine wine, a true sandalwood based attar actually improves with age. You cannot find a more natural perfume than a true attar.
Oud is a fragrant resin used in commercial perfumes that come from the Aqualaria tree. When the trees become infected with a type of mold the tree produces a dark aromatic resin which is the tree’s immune response to the attack. The resin embedded wood is commonly called gaharu, jinko, aloeswood, agarwood, or eagleswood and is valued in many cultures for its distinctive fragrance. Arabic,Chinese, and Ayurvedic doctors have used it in the treatment of many ailments including mental illness. The heartwood is often burned as incense.
The popularity of Oud is on the rise and the price of a pure oil is often comparable to gold. We strive to bring a quality oud that is reasonably priced to the general public. A majority of our attars and mukhallats contain oud as an enhancer and fixative.
Essential Oils and Absolutes
These are natural oils typically obtained by steam distillation containing the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted. Essential oils are undiluted and without any carrier oils.
Resins refer to natural gums or tree saps extracted from a variety of small trees and shrubs including myrrh, frankincense, benzoin, labdanum, and oakmoss to name a few. Resins often have a rich, sweet, balsamic, and woody aroma. Resins have been used throughout history in perfumes, incense and medicine.
A common word used in Arabian perfumery often used to describe a certain type of mixture containing oils such as oudh, rose, musk, sandalwood, and amber that are combined to create a perfume oil.
A substance obtained from the male musk gland of deer or civet cats. The substance has been extensively in perfumery , incense material, and medicine, since ancient times. It was and still is one of the most expensive animal products in the world. The aroma is extremely strong and only small amounts are needed. The aroma of musk is known for its alluring effect on the opposite sex, and considered an aphrodisiac. We sell only ethically harvested musk and the animals are not killed. There are also many non -animal botanical based musks available which mimic the notes of the animalic scent.
